How To Get To Know And Love Your Natural Hair
@truleytalentedbeauty
Whether you went natural or have always been natural, you probably have a story or two about a time when you didn’t feel great about your natural hair. It could’ve been when you were young and in school, fearing you wouldn’t fit in. It could have been at a job interview, on a date, at a family gathering. Sitting in the memory of those moments can be painful. And they leave you feeling like the way your hair naturally grows out of your head is all wrong. Well, we know that isn’t true. So if you’ve ever had a hard time getting to know and love your own natural hair, here are some tips to help you out.
Get Comfortable with Your Natural Texture
The first thing you need to do is get familiar with your texture. And we mean your texture the way it is naturally, not your texture stretched or manipulated in any way. The best way to do this is wash, condition, and detangle your hair. Apply a leave-in moisturizer and either let your hair air dry or use a hair dryer. Resist the urge to manipulate your strands in any way as they dry.
Once your hair is dry, spend some time in the mirror studying it, the way it frames your face, the way it coils or zigzags or waves. Try not to compare your hair to anyone else’s, get comfortable with your hair just as it is. Try wearing your hair in this state every now and then. A twist out here and a blowout there is fine, as long as you are spending time with your hair as it naturally is.
Stick To A Haircare Routine
If you and your natural hair aren’t on the best of terms, this might be something you’ve avoided doing. The truth is, the more time you spend with your hair, the better your relationship with it is likely to get. Come up with a routine that you can stick to, and keep it up.
This will not only keep your hair healthy and looking/feeling it’s best, it will also give you the opportunity to get to know your hair better. You’ll start to know what your hair needs, when it’s time for a trim, etc. You can catch problems before they get too big. All in all, a routine can do wonders for your attitude towards your hair.
Follow Content Creators With Textures Similar To Yours
This may seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how effective it can be. Constantly consuming content from online creators who’s texture isn’t similar to yours can create a negative relationship between you and your own hair. It could cause you to feel like there’s something wrong with your hair. We’re here to tell you there is absolutely nothing wrong with your hair. Natural hair comes in all shapes, lengths, and textures. If you can see other textures like yours, it can help you feel less alone.
These are just three of the many ways you can improve your relationship with your natural hair and learn to love it just the way it is.
