12 Tips for Stimulating Hair Growth
Whether your length goals are shoulder length, bra strap length, waist length, or beyond, you’re gonna need a good hair care regime to get there. Your folks at Miche have got you covered with 12 tips for stimulating hair growth.
Wash your hair & scalp every week
Many say that dirty hair grows faster, but the truth is waiting too long between washes can have major consequences for your natural hair. For one, it can cause excess dirt and oil to build up on your scalp and strands. And instead of that feeding your hair, it can work to keep moisture or nutrients out. Also, extended periods of time between washes can make hair extremely dry and brittle. This over a prolonged period of time can actually make your progress go backwards instead of forwards. We recommend washing and conditioning hair thoroughly every seven days, with a biweekly deep conditioning treatment for the best results.
Use high quality nutrient-rich products
Just like the rest of your body, your hair needs nutrients to survive and thrive. And just like food, not all hair products are created equally when it comes to how rich they are in vital nutrients. If you’re not careful, you could be putting the hair product equivalent to junk food on your hair. Learn what your hair needs to be healthy and strong and stick to products that have those ingredients.
Do more scalp massages
Not only do scalp massages feel great, they’re also great for stimulating hair growth. The way it works is that the massaging motion draws blood to the scalp, improving circulation. Improved circulation can activate the follicles and that promotes growth. You can massage your scalp with or without oil, on wet hair or dry hair. Just be gentle on your roots.
Get a trim every 3-4 months
It might feel counterintuitive for some, but regular trims are crucial to hair growth. The reason for this is length retention. If you aren’t getting your hair trimmed at regular intervals, it's likely costing you several inches of growth a year. On average, your hair grows about six inches every year, and the reason you may not see it is breakage. Trims keep your ends sealed and strong, protecting against breakage.
Limit heat styling
It is possible to healthily incorporate heat into your natural hair routine, but too much heat can be detrimental to the health of your hair. It can cause your hair to become dry and brittle, which can lead to breakage and overall reduced length retention. Limiting heat styling and/or only using low levels of heat can help promote growth, length retention, and general hair health.
Sleep on a satin pillowcase
We’ve all seen the memes about waking up only to find that your satin scarf or bonnet has fallen off while you were sleeping. You know a great way to avoid that? Opt for a satin pillowcase instead. It provides the same protection without the worry that it will fall off during the night. If you’re a particularly wild sleeper, we suggest using some combination of both.
Eat more greens
What you put in your body is just as important, if not more important than what you put on your hair. So if you want to boost your hair growth, you should incorporate more greens into your diet. Your body prioritizes it’s more crucial functions like keeping your heart pumping, your organs working, and your blood flowing to your arms and legs. When there’s a deficiency in your diet, your body sends what nutrients it does get to those more important parts of your body, so your hair, nails, and skin get sacrificed first.
It’s important to eat a surplus of greens and other nutrients-packed foods so that your body has what it needs to take care of all functions as well as keep your hair growing strong and healthy.
Increase water intake
This tip is similar to the previous tip. Your body needs a lot of water to run at full capacity, and when you don’t get the water you need, your hair, skin, and nails suffer first. Drinking enough water can promote growth because water is your hair’s first line of defense against dryness.
Exercise more
Exercise can improve your circulation, and as we’ve discussed in an earlier tip, good circulation is crucial to activating your hair follicles. In a more general sense, when your body is healthy, your hair has a better chance of being healthy.
Get Blood Levels checked for deficiencies
We now know how important nutrients are to promoting hair growth. If you aren’t sure if you have any vitamin deficiencies, you could go to the doctor and have your blood levels tested. This can tell you if you’re deficient in anything and give you an idea of how you should tweak your diet and lifestyle.
Take a multivitamin
Where your diet fails, a multivitamin can fill the gaps. There are several different options, brands, and vitamin types to choose from. And they’re easy to incorporate into your routine. Just take them in the morning with breakfast, or with any other meal during your day.
Stress Less
Finally, reducing your stress can do wonders for stimulating hair growth. Stress can wreak havoc on your hair. It can cause your strands to fall out at an accelerated rate, slow or halt hair follicle activity, and/or cause your hair to become dry and brittle. You can reduce your stress by meditating, yoga, exercise, etc.. It’s also important to cut out unnecessary stresses in your life. A stress free healthy life is the ultimate key to stimulating hair growth.
